CBPRS: A City Based Parking and Routing System

    Get PDF
Navigational systems assist drivers in finding a route between two locations that is time optimal in theory but seldom in practice due to delaying circumstances the system is unaware of, such as traffic jams. Upon arrival at the destination the service of the system ends and the driver is forced to locate a parking place without further assistance. We propose a City Based Parking Routing System (CBPRS) that monitors and reserves parking places for CBPRS participants within a city. The CBPRS guides vehicles using an ant based distributed hierarchical routing algorithm to their reserved parking place. Through means of experiments in a simulation environment we found that reductions of travel times for participants were significant in comparison to a situation where vehicles relied on static routing information generated by the well known Dijkstra’s algorithm. Furthermore, we found that the CBPRS was able to increase city wide traffic flows and decrease the number and duration of traffic jams throughout the city once the number of participants increased.information systems;computer simulation;dynamic routing

Dropout rates of regular courses and MOOCs

    No full text
Recently we observe an enormous grow of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). But it proves that the dropout rates of MOOCs are very high. One of the main causes are missing of necessary capabilities of students, inability of students to manage their study and a missing appropriate didactic model. In this paper we compare the dropout rates of MOOCs, regular courses and courses using new didactical approaches as blended learning and flip the classroom. Finally we discuss possible ways how to teach 21st century skills as cooperative working, learning, creativity, networking and how to solve real life problems in a context sensitive approach. Our research findings are based on educational experiments at Delft University of Technology (DUT)

The Didactic Impact of the ETN FETCH Project

    No full text
The ETN FETCH project is about Future Education and Training. One of the goals was to develop new didactic models and to include social media in the process of teaching and learning. Some new didactic models have been developed. We will report about them in this paper. FETCH partners also performed some experiments using innovative teaching models as Flip the classroom and MOOCs. The results are reported at e-Learning conferences. In this paper we will discuss the to be expected impact of the innovative didactic research of the FETCH project in future Lifelong Learning. We describe some real life events underlying the same didactical principles, showing the societal relevance and impact of our developed model

The impact of COVID-19 Epidemic on Teaching and Learning

Recently articles in Newspapers, University News Bulletins and Scientific Literature report about negative aspects of the wellbeing of students caused by COVID-19 epidemic. Half of the students have mental problems and don't participate in the teaching learning process anymore. In the Netherlands, Universities are surveyed by questionnaires, researching the mental health problems of students. In this paper we focus on students of Delft University of Technology. It proved from surveys, that many students complain about loneliness, fear, sleep deprivation and lack of study motivation. In this paper we report about experiments at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science, how students can be activated, motivated and socialized via study activities presented at the website of one of the Study Societies and via study-buddy groups. Students were personally invited to take part in discussions via a Forum, to enroll in group activities and to visit special lectures. A special COVID-19 didactics has been developed to stimulate students to make assignments in Calculus and Programing via Massive Open Online Courses developed in the framework EdX, an online learning destination and MOOC provider. Automated Access Control via License Plate Recognition using Neocognitron Neural Network

    No full text
In 1979 Fukushima developed a hierarchical, multilayered neural network called Neocognitron and used it for the automatic recognition of handwritten Japanese symbols. We combined the Neocognitron classifier with a special image and segment processor and applied the system in 2001 for automatic recognition of license plates in laboratory experiments. In this paper we report about a special image acquisition module and a postprocessor. We tested the system in real life conditions in an application of automated access control.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository 'You share, we take care!' - Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Interactive Intelligenc

Measurement of Air Pollution by Measurement of Traffic Density

    No full text
The areas of many cities in the Netherlands are covered by a network of stationary sensors, measuring special components of air pollution such as CO2, NO2, PM2.5 and PM10. The pollution with fine dust along roads, surrounding and crossing the city is primarily related to traffic density. To measure traffic density, we used a license plate recognizer based on a special Neural Network Neocognitron, analyzing the video footage of surveillance cameras along the roads. We also studied the onset and offset of traffic density to predict traffic density, using the first recorded sparse traffic data. In cooperation with MIT Senseable City Lab the Technical University of Delft has developed special mobile, low cost sensors to measure air pollution. These mobile sensors are integrated with stationary sensors to a heterogeneous sensor network and enable measurement of air pollution out of the reach of the stationary sensor network.. Personalized digital fitness coach

    No full text
The Corona crisis limits the mobility of people and it proves that many people have an increased body mass index. A lot of people want to increase their fitness and to boost their immune system. There is a run-on fitness schools and fitness equipment for the home environment. At fitness schools, fitness coaches are available for personalized instructions and supervision. Fitness in the home environment lacks personalized instruction and supervision and can cause serious injuries. In this paper a digital coach will be introduced providing digital support and supervision. The digital coach offers personalized fitness program, supervises athletes during fitness exercises and provides a supporting system concerning injuries. A prototype of the developed system can be downloaded as an app on a smart phone.Interactive Intelligenc

Crisis Management Using Multiple Camera Surveillance Systems

During recent disasters such as tsunami, flooding, hurricanes, nuclear disaster, earthquake people have to leave their living areas for their own safety. But it proves that some people are not informed about the evacuation, or are not willing or able to leave or don’t know how to leave the hazardous areas. The topic of the paper is how to adapt current video surveillance systems along highway and streets to semi-automatic surveillance systems. When a suspicious event is detected a human operator in the control room has to be alerted to take appropriate actions. The architecture of the system and main modules are presented in the paper. Different algorithms to detect localize and track people are published by the authors elsewhere but are summarized in the current paper. The system has been tested in a real life environment and the test results are presented in the paper.Intelligent SystemsElectrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc

A MOOC on control of flooding in Prague

    No full text
The paper is about the development of a MOOC on the flooding of the river Vltava in the Czech country. The MOOC has been designed as a serious game. Students from all over the world are invited to take part in the management team to reduce the negative impact of the flooding. The MT has to take decisions about evacuation, building barriers and opening of dams upwards the river. Members of the MT negotiate via social media. The design and the implementation of the MOOC will be presented in the paper and the first results of experiments.Interactive Intelligenc
